ROCKFORD, Mich. - Jovaan Daniels was so focused on winning the game that he almost forgot how close he was to 1,000 career points.

The Hudsonville High School senior guard reached the milestone in the fourth quarter of a huge matchup with O-K Red Conference rival Rockford. Hudsonville pulled out a 62-55 win.

“Going into the game, It wasn’t about to get my 1,000th,” Daniels said. “We were playing to win. I didn’t want to force any shots. We had to win the game.”

Daniels, a 5-foot-11 guard, has been starting on varsity since he was a freshman.

“It’s really nice,” he said. “It’s been a dream of mine going into high school.”

Daniels finished with a team-high 28 points on Friday. He needed 23 to reach 1,000 and he scored it in the fourth quarter on a floater.

Daniels is just the second player in school history to reach 1,000 points. The school record is 1,047 by Brent Hibbitts. Hibbitts graduated in 2015 before playing at the University of Michigan.

“My goal is to get that record,” he said. “I should be able to break his record by the end of the regular season.”

Daniels, who is is averaging 20 points per game, has offers from Hope College and Calvin University.
