GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Josh Bascom sat on the end of the bench as he cheered on his Grand Rapids Storm teammates on Saturday.

The Rockford High School freshman won’t be playing anytime soon. He broke his ankle last week during an open gym.

On Saturday, he was in a walking boot and had to use crutches to get around a busy gym during the Rumble in the Rapids travel basketball tournament.

“I’m getting surgery next Tuesday,” said Bascom, who will have a screw inserted into his ankle. “I’ll be out for 12 weeks, but I can walk in six weeks. Then I can start playing.”

So what happened?

“During an open gym, I tried to grab a rebound over my brother,” Bascom said of older brother Josh, who is a junior at Rockford. “I kinda hung on his back for a second and I came down awkwardly on my ankle. It just kinda went sideways.”

Bascom, a 6-foot-4 forward, is one of the top 2028 players in the state. He already has an offer from Ferris State University. He was on the Rockford varsity team along with fellow freshman Eli Wolfe.

Bascom said he’s done for the travel ball season.

“I just thought of how I’m going to miss the whole AAU season,” he said. “You can’t take being healthy for granted. I wish I was playing, but I get to cheer on my (Storm) teammates.”
