GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Isaiah Guyton announced he has transferred from Wyoming Godwin Heights High School to a prep school for his senior basketball season.
The 6-foot-6, 195-pound guard/forward will play at Crosstrainers Christian Academy in New Rochelle, N.Y.
“I’m excited,” Guyton said. “It’s a better opportunity and to just chase my dreams.”
How did Guyton hear about Crosstrainers?
“The coach reached out to me,” he said of Andre Faison. “He flew me out to play in a tournament with his AAU team. I really liked the team and he told me he coached a prep school team.”
Guyton averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds as a junior at Godwin Heights and was voted as the O-K Silver Conference Player of the Year.
He said it was tough to break the news to first-year Godwin coach Braima Hai.
“Yes of course (it was hard),” Guyton said. “That’s my dawg. I got lots of love for him. He knew it would be in my best interest to pursue this.”
His parents, Nych Guyton and Brittney Carney, are supportive of the move.
“They saw it as a good opportunity as well and knew it would be best for me,” Guyton said.
Guyton said he’ll live in an apartment that the school pays for.
The Crosstrainers website is rather vague. It doesn’t show a basketball schedule, roster, stats, the team’s past records or list grads who went on to play in college.
The site says “With our accredited online schooling and NCAA-approved courses, athletes can balance rigorous training while staying academically on track, maintaining college eligibility, and showcasing their talents to recruiters.”
Guyton played travel ball mostly with Team Hustle this summer. He has college offers from Calvin University and Clearly University.
