GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Cam Ryans has been named a finalist for the 2026 Michigan Mr. Basketball Award.

The Northview High School senior is one of five finalist named for the Hal Schram Trophy. The winner will be announced on March 9.

“It’s a blessing,” Ryans said. “It’s a testament to how much the community and my family has poured into me.”

The other finalists are:

  • Jaylohn Allen, Wayne Memorial

  • Greg Grays Jr., Birmingham Brother Rice

  • James Martin, Muskegon

  • KJ Torbert, East Lansing

Ryans is the second Northview basketball player to be a finalist for the award. Kyler VanderJagt finished second in the voting in 2022.

“It’s pretty cool with how much talent Northview has had recently,” Ryans said. “It shows how hard it is to be a Mr. Basketball candidate.”

Ryans, a 6-foot-4 guard, has committed to play at Western Michigan University. His older brother E.J. Ryans is currently a sophomore guard at WMU.

He recently became Northview’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing VanderJagt’s mark of 1,441 points. Ryans scored a career-high 41 points in a big win over No. 1 ranked East Lansing on Feb. 7. He then topped it with 43 points against Grand Rapids Union on Feb. 17.

“It was my favorite games ever,” Ryans said of the matchup with KJ Torbert. “It was highly anticipated. People want do know who the best player in the state is.”

Northview won that game 63-46 to hand East Lansing its only loss of the season.

There have only been four Grand Rapids area basketball players to win Mr. Basketball: Matt Steigenga (South Christian) in 1988, Drew Neitzel (Wyoming Park) in 2024, David Kool (South Christian) in 2006 and Durral Brooks (Grand Rapids Catholic Central) in 2024.
