HUDSONVILLE, Mich. - When Jovaan Daniels was a freshman, he had a goal to be the highest scoring player in school history.

And he did it.

The Hudsonville High School senior guard became the all-time leading scorer in school history on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in a 61-48 loss to Muskegon.

“This was a really important goal for me,” Daniels said. “Coming into Hudsonville High School, that was my main goal, to be one of the best players to ever come out of here. I worked every day and this is a dream come true to reach this goal.”

Daniels scored on a layup in the third quarter to surpass Brent Hibbitts, who has 1,047 career points. Hudsonville coach Eric Elliott called a time out and the PA announcer told the crowd of the record.

He currently has 1,056 career points and finished with 20 points in the game.

After the game, his former teammate Brayden Szamrej congratulated him. They played two years together.

“It was cool playing with some guys like Brayden Szamrej,” Daniels said. “He was a good role model for me to be a good leader.”

Szamrej is in his second season playing basketball at Northwood University.

Daniels, a 5-foot-11 guard, has yet to make a college decision. He has offers from Calvin University, Davenport University, Ferris State University and Hope College.

“I just got a couple of D2 offers recently,” he said. “But I’m waiting until after the season to make my final decision.”
