GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Michael Lindquist isn’t comfortable when the spotlight is on at him.

But the Greenville High School basketball player sheepishly let his teammates and parents show him some love when he scored his 1,000th career point on Tuesday in the Cornerstone University Holiday Tournament.

"I thought it was huge for the team to go for the win, so I didn’t want to draw attention to myself,” Lindquist said.

He drained a 3-pointer in the third quarter and the Greenville fans went nuts. But there was no timeout and no recognition of the milestone during the game.

They just continued play.

“It’s awesome,” Greenville coach Joel Visser said of the accomplishment. “We knew he was six points away. We talked about that a little bit at practice. He’s like ‘let’s not change anything. We’re not doing anything different. Let’s just focus on beating Forest Hills Central.’”

Lindquist finished with 12 points as Greenville beat Forest Hills Central 71-58.

“Traditionally, they are one of the best programs around,” Visser said. “So that’s a big win for us. Now we can have Christmas feeling good about ourselves and where we’re at.”

Senior forward Braden Latimer had 27 points and 15 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (6-1).

After the game, Lindquist was given a sparkling gold-colored basketball with his name on it to honor the 1,000th point.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “I’m gonna have to find a case for it.”

Lindquist, who is averaging 18.9 points per game, also let it slip that he has verbally committed to Alma College.

“I’m committed to Alma,” he said. “I haven’t announced it yet. My parents wanted me to wait to make sure everything was all good. It’s a program that’s on the rise.”

Lindquist - the son of Scott and Lee Lindquist - averaged 16.8 points per game last year and was named River Cities Alliance Player of the Year.

Does he remember his first career point?

“My first varsity bucket was a floater against Kenowa Hills,” he recalled.

That was on Dec. 13, 2022. He’s been on varsity since he was a freshman.

Lindquist is just the second Greenville boys basketball player to reach 1,000 career points. The first was Zach Ingles, who finished with 2,130 points.
