GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Rockford High School’s Jake Bascom has committed to play basketball at Central Michigan University.

The 6-foot-6 power forward got his first offer from former Ferris State University coach Andy Bronkema when he was just a sophomore. When Bronkema got the job at CMU in May, one of his first offers again was to Bascom to join him up in Mount Pleasant.

“Coach Bronkema has been with me since Day 1 in my recruiting process and that meant a lot to me,” Bascom said.

The incoming senior had offers from five schools, including Ferris State, Saginaw Valley State, Northern Michigan, Grand Valley State and CMU.

“I really like Coach Bronkema and the rest of the staff he has brought to CMU and I’m really excited to be apart of what they are building there,” Bascom said.

Bascom averaged 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds for a Rockford team that finished 22-3 under coach Kyle Clough. His younger brother Josh Bascom is a sophomore on the Rams roster. He also has an offer from Ferris State.

“It’s very cool,” Josh said. “And I know that my brother has always had a dream of going DI. I’m just happy for him and Central feels like home to him.”

Jake, the son of Justin and Jen Bascom, likes that CMU is a short drive from Rockford.

“Central is also only an hour from my house,” he said. “So to me it couldn’t be more perfect:  Coaches I love, close to home, and a Division I program.”

Rockford is playing at a team camp in Sandusky, Ohio this weekend.
