Cam Ryans having a strong summer, never considered leaving Northview

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Cam Ryans was torching every team he played against last weekend.
The Northview High School senior, who is one of the best players in Michigan, played on the main court four times during the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan team camp at Grand Valley State. He scored 31 points against Brother Rice, including the buzzer-beater in sudden-death overtime, and another 25 points against Wayne Memorial.
“I love playing at BCAM,” Ryans said. “It’s one of the best events in Michigan. There’s a lot of talented teams and a lot of coaches. A lot of exposure.”
Ryans has gotten a lot of exposure. He has offers from four Division I schools, including Western Michigan University, where his older brother E.J. Ryans is a guard and teammate Brady Swartz, who just graduated from Northview.

So is WMU a top candidate?
“Who wouldn’t want to play with their brother?” Ryans asked. “Me and him played two years of high school together at Northview. We know each other well (on the court). We’re like Batman and Robin. And me and Brady go way back. I’m definitely thinking about (WMU), of course.”
Northview still doesn’t have a head coach.
After David Chana left in late May to take a coaching job in Florida, Northview has been in limbo. The school is holding interviews later this week. In the meantime, assistant coaches Jeff Anama and Josh Balhorn have been running the team.
“We don’t really think about it,” Ryans said. “We’re all brothers. No matter who the coach is, we still have the same game.”
Did Ryans consider leaving Northview after Chana left?
“No, not really,” he said. “Northview has treated me too well. I don’t think a lot of players get the kind of treatment I get at Northview. The teachers there are kind to me and helping me with school work. I wasn’t thinking about going anywhere else. I get treated too well here.”
Ryans, a 6-foot-5 guard, averaged 21.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season as Northview was 19-6. Ryans likes how his team looks so far this summer.
“I like our team,” Ryans said. “We’re getting at it defensively. Offensively, I’m not worried about it. We’ve got Anthony Willis, he’ll step up. We got Brayden Williams, an all-conference player (from Wyoming), and I think Tyris Thomas will step up, too. We’ll be just fine.”
Ryans has offers from WMU, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Wright State and is hoping for more soon.
“Last weekend, I went to the Wright State camp and I got an offer from them,” he said. “I’ll be looking to get more offers. I have an unofficial visit to Toledo next week and I’m setting up a couple of official visits after July.”
